Positive Behavior System:
My classroom management system is based on rewarding students for positive behavior and emphasizing good choices students make throughout the day.
The students and I discussed our classroom rules “Class Values” this week and all students signed a poster acknowledging their acceptance of these rules. We will continue to read books about good manners and discuss what type of behaviors will be expected in our classroom. Our Classroom Values are posted by the door and are as follows:
1. We will raise our hand to speak.
2. We will obey safety rules.
3. We will listen when someone is speaking to us.
4. We will treat classroom and school property with respect.
5. We will be kind to others and use good manners.
6. We will use an indoor voice.
7. We will follow directions quickly.
8. We will have fun learning!
Positive Behavior System:
A whole class incentive system will be used titled, “Brownie Points”. When the class as a whole is caught doing something especially well (working quietly, no talking in the hall, a compliment from another adult in the building, etc.) a brownie will be added to our cookie sheet. This week we discussed possible prizes for filling the brownie sheet such as show and tell, ice cream party, extra recess, popcorn party, etc. and the class voted to work towards earning an ice cream party once the cookie sheet is filled. Each time we receive a prize for filling the cookie sheet, we will vote on the next prize to begin earning “Brownie Points” towards.
Students all have their name written on a popsicle stick in a “Secret Student” cup. Each day a name will be pulled as the “Secret Student”. Throughout the day I will remind the class to make good choices and tell them that I am watching to make sure the “Secret Student” is doing what is asked of him/her. At the end of the day, if the “Secret Student” has had a good day, his/her name will be announced and he/she will be able to choose a prize. Their name will then be moved into another cup until all students have had a chance to be “Secret Student”. We will repeat this process multiple times throughout the year. Pointing out positive actions I see happening in the classroom leads to more positive actions taking place, rather than focusing on unwanted behaviors. (If our name is pulled for “Secret Student” and we have an “off day”, the name will be returned to the cup to be drawn another day and an announcement to the class will not be made.)
When an unwanted behavior occurs, the student will be reminded to make good choices. If the unwanted behavior continues, the student will be issued a consequence such as 5 minutes of “think time” to discuss better choices with the teacher. When necessary, depending on the behavior or frequency of the behavior, a “Making Good Choices” note will be sent home and/or a phone call made to the parents. If a note is sent home for inappropriate behavior, it must be signed and returned the following school day so I know you have discussed the behavior with your child. If I see a pattern of behaviors developing, I will contact you so we can discuss the behavior(s). Occasionally, I will reach out to support staff in the building such as our psychologist Mrs. Mayes, our social worker Mrs. Lemons, or our principal Mr. Gunter to discuss appropriate behaviors with a child. Please know our entire staff works together to help educate your child and we all help one another to help your child become successful. A trip to the principal’s office or a talk with the social worker doesn’t mean the problem is too big for me to handle, it might just mean I wasn’t able to handle it at that moment in time and needed support.
